Time waits for no man, but if you're interested in a handmade clock to keep you posted, there's a new shop in town. Haug's Handcrafted Clocks, 401 North Brown Street, is open for business.
David Haug, a lifelong resident of Rhinelander, has been making clocks for 20 years, though he started working in wood more than 30 years ago.
"I was working at McDonald's Lumber Company for Dick McDonald," said Haug. "I started out making cabinets and knickknacks, paper towel holders and picture frames. I had an old friend who was a carpenter. In 1988, he told me to try making a clock. I made my first grandfather clock and got hooked. After making six grandfather clocks in a row I decided to go into business for myself. Since then I've made mantle, wall and desk clocks."
Grandfather or grandmother, Haug will make any type of clock.
"A grandfather clock has a straight waist, straight up and down on the sides. A grandmother clock has more of a waist, more of a figure of a woman."
In 1992, he went into business in Pine Lake. Haug uses only the best German movements, made by a company named Hermle. Customers can special order their clock with any kind of wood, exotics like zebra wood or cocobolo, or local woods like maple and cherry.
Haug will also repair, clean and oil your heirloom.
"And I make house calls," said Haug. "I like to think my prices are reasonable. If you're thinking of a gift, I can make a grandfather clock before Christmas with three weeks lead time."
Handmade clocks are his specialty, but Haug also carries quilts made by June Lego and eventually hopes to carry handmade pottery as well.
