TIME WELL SPENT

Collectors of six-figure watches aren't hesitating when the perfect piece comes along. Last month Geneva watch auctioneer Antiquorum sold three rare Patek Philippes for $564,000, $684,000 and $780,000. Julien Schaerer, Antiquorum watch director, says such sales make sense; these timepieces will probably hold their value better than something worth a mere $20,000. Consider this square-button, split-second 1945 Patek timepiece auctioned by Antiquorurn. As one of only two stainless steel, first-generation Splits known to exist, it's a watch-lover's fantasy piece -- the rarest of the rare. Some collectors prefer to indulge in something showier. Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillon, introduced in April 2007 by Girard-Perregaux, is a playful choice. It features a miniaturized mechanical slot machine with three reels that spin when a tiny arm on the side of the case is pulled. Vacheron Constantin's platinum perpetual calendar minute wristwatch, made circa 2000, sold at a Sotheby's Hong Kong auction.
