Nov. 1--The spooks and goblins were out early on a warm Halloween that guaranteed a nice evening for trick-or-treaters Saturday. The scariest part of the annual spook night was the spectre of turning back the clocks an hour this morning to mark the end of daylight savings time.
So if you haven't adjusted your clocks yet, you're an hour ahead of everyone else.
At the Colorado State Fair Events Center, the volunteers working at the 9 a.m. H1N1 flu shot clinic came in costume to put a cheery face on the job of vaccinating about 1,700 Puebloans. For the children getting inoculated, costumes didn't seem to fool them much. They still recognized a needle when they saw one.
At the Buell Children's Museum and the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, staff and volunteers also were dressed for the occasion, as the museum gave kids an early chance to show off their outfits through the middle of the day. Mr. E, a local magician, entertained in the theater. "If you're looking for the Halloween spirit, you came to the right place," said Dr. Sally Berryman, president of the arts center board, in greeting the audience. She was dressed as an African explorer. At the Pueblo Ice Arena, kids got a discount to come skate in costume, and Katie Mason brought her youngsters, 9-year-old Peyton and 7-year-old Canaan, in costume. Her youngest, Colt, had to stay in her lap, because you just can't skate at 2 months old.
"It didn't matter that it was a beautiful day outside, they love to skate," Mrs. Mason said, pointing to the skeleton and witch going round on the ice.
At Party America, 4410 Dillon Drive, vampires seemed to be the costume of choice this year. You can attribute that to the recent "Twilight" vampire movies and novels, or just the public mood after a long year of lay-offs and recession.
"But we're selling a lot of priest and nun costumes," added the clerk.
