Library draws readers with family movies

Families won't need to look any farther than the Decatur Public Library to go see movies in the next few months.

The library at 130 N. Franklin St. will be showing at least two films a month as part of a yearlong attempt to draw more visitors using free movies as an incentive, said Eleanor Wood, a reference librarian.

"Some of the movies will be ones kids haven't seen but ones their parents enjoyed," Wood said. "They shouldn't lose their appeal to younger audiences."

A sing-a-long series begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday with a showing of "Mamma Mia." A Saturday afternoon family movie series starts at 3 p.m. Jan. 23 with "Muppets Take Manhattan."

Movies will be shown either in the Madden Auditorium or the Children's Auditorium, and popcorn will be served, Wood said.

Make no mistake: The library will be encouraging children and adults to read even if they come for movies, said Karen Bjorkman, assistant city librarian.

Many movies are either based on a book or related to books, Bjorkman said. The librarians will work to suggest books related to the films or have special displays ready for each viewing, she said.

"The brain is a muscle, and you have to exercise it," she said.

The movies are one of the services the library is attempting to provide to help people on tight budgets, Bjorkman said.

"A lot of people have had to cancel Internet access," she said. "They've had to economize. It's one more way to get them in the library."

The movies are paid for by the Friends of the Library and do not come out of its regular budget, Bjorkman said. The library bought a one-year license to show movies that will run through June, Wood said.

Wood said the librarians would be interested in knowing what movies community members would like to see.

Wood said movie viewings started in the summer with the "Harry Potter" movies being shown and continued into the fall and winter with holiday-related films.
