This time of year, after two weeks of post-holiday blues, I get excited about red-carpet season -- seeing some of the movies nominated for awards, planning what Oscar party I'll attend, that kinda stuff. But last week's earthquake in Haiti flipped my reality switch. Things that seemed somewhat important are trivial -- including my annual sit-down to watch the Golden Globes at a friend's house, scribbling catty comments in my notebook, wondering aloud how high a celebrity's stylist had to be to put her in that dress or let him walk out the door with that beard.
Still, as my buddy Shadey just pointed out in the eleva tor, "That's what you do." Point made. So let's get to Globe-trotting.
Black is back
Opening the evening by poking fun at American "Office" mate Steve Carell was host Ricky Gervais, wearing one of the evening's most obvious trends: Black -- not surprising for multiple reasons, if you think two seconds about it.
Other notables ala noir included Mariah Carey's cleavage. The neckline of her gorgeous Herve Leger gown was less plungey than it was absolute free fall. I was disappointed she didn't get up on stage a bit toasted like she did recently. That was entertaining.
Honorable mentions in black included my beloved Meryl "T-Bone" Streep (did y'all get that joke last night?), who had one of my favorite acceptance speeches. Not sure I liked Julia Roberts' dress, though -- loved her necklace and hair more, very bohemian. But not very red carpet.
"Man Men" bombshell January Jones is hotter than fish grease, but her death-knoll black Lanvin dress and matching headband just ... Well, it was like throwing cold water on her.
Much livelier in the same shade was Penelope Cruz, who wore vintage Armani. Notice how tan she was, though? Same thing for Jeremy Piven -- looked better than he has in years, actually, in his skinny-tied tux.
And good grief, is Helen Mirren just absolutely stunning or what? Not sure who she was wearing, but it really played up her hourglass figure. Halle Berry was bodacious as usual in cleavage-baring black, and Jennifer Aniston was saucy in a dress slit nigh to the Netherlands. Oooh, and Jodie Foster -- incredible.
Surprisingly bad
Porcelain goddess Nicole Kidman wore a Nina Ricci gown -- a rather pale gown that, put against her fabulous skin, kinda washed her out. People raved about this dress, but the bows on the side were distracting. Of course, I was distracted by trying to see what was on everyone's plate during the event, too, so take that into consideration.
Drew Barrymore is one of my all-time favorite celebrities, has been since "E.T." And despite my happiness over her winning for "Grey Gardens," I was less than ecstatic about her dazzling champagne dress -- specifically the large hard-pouf detail thingies (fancy term, huh?) on her hip and shoulder, which reminded me of the large piece of coral in my friend's bathroom. Maybe that's why I thought it looked hard.
Emily Blunt was pretty in pink Dolce & Gabbana, and Maggie Gyllenhaal and Fergie (OK, what's the skinny on her and hubby Josh lately?) looked pretty in Elie Saab. But I'm not digging her hair. It's almost too severe for her.
And everyone's favorite girl next door, Sandra Bullock, was just fabulous in a purple strapless, sheer skirted Bottega Venata gown.
Gorgeous in green were Amy Adams (whose dress I liked better after realizing she was pregnant); Sigourney Weaver, who should wear that color more frequently; and "Precious" star (who should've won) Gabourey Sidibe in a malachite-hued Kevan Hall number with crystal embellishments.
In blue were Kate Winslet, whose beautiful gown seemed a smidgen on the too-done-before side. Same goes for Reese Witherspoon in a pretty one-shoulder blue gown. The word "safe" kept popping to mind, though. Ginnifer Goodwin wore blue best in a sexy little number.
One of my very favorite dresses was Zoe Saldana's red Louis Vuitton. Some friends told me they loved the color, but the bottom was a bit too "Project Runway." I can sort of see what they're talking about, but overall, the dress was a knockout.
Was much less thrilled with Kate Hudson's radiant white Marchesa -- a nice relief from a sea of black. However, the ruffly top made her look like she was popping out of a Kleenex box most of the evening, at least at certain angles.
I was more than a little disappointed that Chloe Sevigny beat out Jane Lynch from "Glee" for a best supporting actress trophy. That's probably why I scribbled "two putty-colored ruffled twin-set sheets sewn together" for her Valentino gown. Yikes ... Someone's apparently missing his caffeine after eight days on the Diet Coke wagon.
