U.S. 1 overpass work will require detours

| Posted in | Posted on

U.S. 1 is closed in both directions today in Fredericksburg between College Avenue and Alvey Drive.

The road will stay closed through noon tomorrow.

Workers are installing a pedestrian bridge over all travel lanes of U.S. 1, necessitating a continuous closure for 40 hours.

The bridge will connect the University of Mary Washington campus with Eagle Village, where the university is constructing a new parking garage and residence hall.

Motorists are encouraged to use Interstate 95 as an alternate route.

Drivers can still access Mary Washington Hospital during the installation.

Southbound drivers on U.S. 1 can turn right onto Mary Washington Boulevard to reach the hospital, and northbound drivers should turn left onto Cowan Boulevard and right onto Mary Washington Boulevard.

If the project must be extended beyond noon tomorrow, messages will be posted online at fredericks burgva.gov and announced on radio stations.
